FinanceSimply Editorial Team

All FinanceSimply guides are plain-English explanations of UK personal finance rules drawn directly from official government sources, HMRC, the FCA, the Bank of England, ONS, and gov.uk. They are not financial advice.

What we do

UK personal finance rules are set by government bodies and laid out in official publications. Those publications are authoritative, but they are often dense, lengthy, and written for specialists. Our job is to read them and explain what they actually mean in plain English, without skipping the important details.

Every guide on FinanceSimply reflects the current rules as published by the relevant official body. We link to primary sources so you can verify everything we say directly at the source.

Not financial advice. FinanceSimply explains rules, it does not tell you what to do with your money. We are not regulated by the FCA and we do not give regulated financial advice. For personal recommendations, speak to a qualified financial adviser.

Our approach

  • We read official sources first. Every guide starts with the relevant HMRC, gov.uk, FCA, Bank of England, ONS, or Ofgem publication, not secondary coverage or third-party commentary.
  • We translate into plain English. We restate the rules in language that does not require a background in tax or economics to understand.
  • We link to primary sources. Every guide links directly to the official government pages so you can read the original yourself.
  • We do not recommend products. We will not tell you which savings account, investment platform, or insurance policy to use. That is financial advice, and we are not here to give it.
  • We do not give regulated advice. FinanceSimply is not FCA-authorised. Nothing on this site should be read as a personal recommendation.
  • We keep guides current. When rules change, allowances, thresholds, legislation, we update the relevant guides to match the latest official position.

Sources we use

  • GOV.UK The UK government’s official information portal, covering tax, benefits, employment, and more. gov.uk →
  • HMRC, HM Revenue & Customs The authority on UK tax rules: income tax, National Insurance, ISAs, capital gains, and all related allowances. hmrc.gov.uk →
  • Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) The UK’s financial services regulator. Source for rules on financial products, consumer protection, and regulated activities. fca.org.uk →
  • Bank of England Sets the UK base interest rate and publishes authoritative data on monetary policy, inflation, and the financial system. bankofengland.co.uk →
  • Office for National Statistics (ONS) The UK’s national statistics agency. Source for official inflation figures (CPI, RPI), earnings data, and economic statistics. ons.gov.uk →
  • Ofgem The energy regulator. Source for the energy price cap and rules governing household gas and electricity tariffs. ofgem.gov.uk →
